Terms of Service

Last updated: October 26, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Braintoll app for Android and iOS ("Braintoll", "the app"), your purchase of the paid tier, "Braintoll Pro", and your use of the free online tools on braintoll.app (Section 14). For how we handle personal data, see our Privacy Policy, which applies alongside these Terms.

1. Who we are

Braintoll is provided by Sebastian Sprafke, Olfersstraße 4, 48153 Münster, Germany, operating as a sole individual without a commercial register entry. Contact: support@braintoll.app. Further disclosures are in our Imprint.

2. Scope

These Terms apply to every use of Braintoll, to every purchase of Braintoll Pro made through Google Play or the App Store, and to the free online tools on braintoll.app (Section 14). Any conflicting or additional terms you propose do not become part of the contract unless we agree to them in writing.

3. What Braintoll does

Braintoll is an app blocker that only lets you open apps you've chosen to block after you answer a learning card, combined with a local flashcard library.

The free tier includes, without limitation:

  • Blocking one (1) app
  • Creating cards manually and using the bundled preset sets
  • Up to 3 AI-generated card sets per month
  • All progress and statistics features

Braintoll Pro does not unlock fundamentally different functionality — it raises usage limits:

  • Blocking an unlimited number of apps
  • Higher daily/monthly limits for AI-generated card sets

Current limits are shown in the app and may change within the bounds of Section 9 below. We also provide free online tools on braintoll.app (Section 14).

4. Formation of contract

Free use of Braintoll begins when you install and use the app. Purchasing Braintoll Pro (monthly, yearly, or a one-time lifetime purchase) happens exclusively through the store you installed Braintoll from: Google Play Billing on Android, or In-App Purchase on the App Store on iOS. The contract for that purchase is formed between you and us once the store confirms the purchase. Pricing, payment processing, and invoicing are handled by Google or Apple; the store's own terms apply in addition to these.

5. Prices and payment

The price shown in Google Play or the App Store at the time of purchase, for your country, is the price that applies, including statutory tax where applicable. Payment is processed entirely by the store — we never receive your payment details (e.g. card numbers).

6. Subscriptions: term, renewal, cancellation

The monthly and yearly plans renew automatically for the same period unless you cancel through the store before the current period ends. Cancellation happens exclusively through the subscription management of Google Play or your Apple Account (reachable in the app via "Manage subscription") and takes effect at the end of the period you've already paid for; we don't provide a pro-rated refund for the remaining part of a paid period.

7. Free trial

The yearly plan may come with a free, seven-day trial, depending on the offer currently configured in the store. Unless you cancel through the store before the trial ends, it converts automatically into a paid yearly subscription at the price shown at the time. The trial is available once per new subscriber, per Google account or Apple Account.

8. Lifetime purchase: what it means and its limits

The one-time "Lifetime" purchase unlocks Braintoll Pro's higher limits without a recurring payment. "Lifetime" does not refer to your own lifetime — it refers to the period during which we operate and provide Braintoll as a service. If we permanently and completely discontinue Braintoll, your access to the higher limits ends when the service is discontinued; beyond the statutory warranty and withdrawal periods, you have no claim to continued service, a substitute, or a pro-rated refund of the purchase price.

Because some parts of Braintoll Pro — in particular AI-assisted card generation — cause us ongoing costs from third-party providers, changes to those parts are additionally governed by Section 9 below, which applies to lifetime purchases too.

9. Changes to feature availability

We reserve the right to adjust Braintoll's and Braintoll Pro's feature set while the app is in active use — in particular, AI card generation limits and individual add-on features — where there is a valid reason, such as:

  • a material change in the cost we're charged by a third-party provider a feature depends on (e.g. our AI provider);
  • technical necessity, legal requirements, or a third-party provider discontinuing an interface we rely on; or
  • measures against abuse.

We'll only make such a change if it doesn't cost you anything extra, we tell you about it clearly and with reasonable advance notice, and it's proportionate to the reason behind it. If a change more than insignificantly reduces your access to Braintoll Pro's core functionality, you may end your Braintoll Pro contract free of charge within 30 days of being notified. For a fully paid lifetime purchase, we'll provide a pro-rated refund on request in that case, based on a reasonable estimate of your remaining usage period. Minor adjustments that don't more than insignificantly affect your use don't trigger this right.

Content stored locally on your device — folders, sets, cards, and review history — is not affected by this section and remains available regardless of Braintoll Pro's feature set.

10. Right of withdrawal

You have the right to withdraw from a Braintoll Pro purchase within fourteen days without giving a reason. The withdrawal period runs for fourteen days from the day the contract was formed.

To exercise your right of withdrawal, you must inform us (Sebastian Sprafke, Olfersstraße 4, 48153 Münster, Germany, support@braintoll.app) of your decision to withdraw by a clear statement (e.g. a letter sent by post, or an email). You may also use the cancellation/refund options available within Google Play, or request a refund from Apple atreportaproblem.apple.com.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it's enough to send your notice of withdrawal before the withdrawal period expires.

Effect of withdrawal: if you withdraw from this contract, we'll refund all payments we received from you without undue delay, and no later than fourteen days from the day we receive notice of your withdrawal.

Early end of the right of withdrawal: your right of withdrawal ends early if we've started performing the contract — that is, unlocking Braintoll Pro — after you expressly agreed, during the store's purchase flow, that we begin before the withdrawal period ends, and you acknowledged that this agreement means you lose your right of withdrawal. Since Braintoll Pro is normally unlocked immediately after purchase, this is the typical case.

11. License and your content

Subject to Section 14, we grant you a simple, non-transferable, non-sublicensable right to use Braintoll for personal, non-commercial purposes. You keep all rights to cards and content you create or upload yourself; you grant us only the rights needed to process that content the way you've asked us to (for example, sending it to our AI provider to generate cards — see our Privacy Policy). You're responsible for making sure content you submit doesn't infringe anyone else's rights and isn't unlawful.

12. Your obligations

You agree not to misuse Braintoll — in particular, not to attempt to circumvent usage limits technically, not to query the service in an automated way (e.g. via scripts), and not to submit content to AI card generation that's unlawful, violates our AI provider's usage policies, or infringes anyone else's rights.

13. Availability and liability

We aim for high availability of Braintoll, especially the core functionality that runs locally on your device, but we can't guarantee uninterrupted availability of features that depend on third-party providers (in particular AI card generation and the stores' subscription management). We're liable without limit for intent and gross negligence, under product liability law, and for harm to life, body, or health. For ordinary negligence, we're only liable for breach of a material contractual obligation, limited to the damage that was foreseeable at the time the contract was formed and typical for a contract of this kind. Liability is otherwise excluded. For the free online tools, Section 14 applies in addition and takes precedence.

14. Free online tools on the website

(1) On braintoll.app we provide free online tools and templates, currently the "Phone habits check" and printable flashcard templates (PDF and Word). They are a free extra and can be used without signing up and without using the app. There is no entitlement to ongoing availability, to particular features, or to updates. We may change or discontinue the tools at any time.

(2) The Phone habits check is an offering for reflecting on your own phone use. It is not a medical or psychological test, is not scientifically validated, and is not intended to detect, diagnose, treat, relieve, or prevent any disease or disorder. The zones it shows are Braintoll's own rough grouping and are neither a diagnosis nor an assessment. It is no substitute for advice from a doctor or another professional. Your answers are processed only in your browser and are neither stored nor sent to us.

(3) You may download the templates free of charge, print them as often as you like, and use them for private, educational, and professional purposes, including in the classroom. You may not sell the templates as your own product or offer them for download on other websites or platforms. Linking to them is allowed. All rights in the templates remain with us.

(4) The tools and templates are provided without warranty. In particular, we do not guarantee that printed cards come out true to size on every printer or look identical in every word processor. For this free provision we are liable only for intent and gross negligence, for fraudulently concealed defects, under product liability law, and for harm to life, body, or health. Liability for ordinary negligence is excluded.

(5) The statements in the Phone habits check are adapted from Kwon, M. et al. (2013), PLOS ONE 8(12): e83558, licensed under CC BY 4.0, and translated for the German version. The authors are not affiliated with Braintoll. Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages, and LibreOffice are trademarks of their respective owners and are mentioned only to describe compatibility.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms, for example when our features or the legal landscape change. We'll notify you of material changes with reasonable advance notice (for example, via an in-app notice or email, if we have a way to reach you). If you don't agree with a material change, you may cancel an existing subscription free of charge before it takes effect; continuing to use Braintoll Pro afterward counts as acceptance.

16. Governing law

These Terms are governed by German law, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). If you're a consumer habitually resident in another EU member state, the mandatory consumer-protection provisions of that state remain unaffected by this choice of law.

17. Dispute resolution

The European Commission provides a platform for online dispute resolution (ODR): https://ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr/. We are not obligated and not willing to participate in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board.

18. Contact

Questions about these Terms can be sent to support@braintoll.app.
